Piano Lessons with Luke H.

Luke H. is a classical pianist and private instructor dedicated to musical artistry and mentorship. His expertise, honed over twenty years as a solo and collaborative pianist, is complemented by extensive experience in classroom and private instruction.

Luke’s musical journey began early with piano and violin lessons, driven by his mother’s steadfast support. At sixteen, he apprenticed under renowned piano pedagogue Gary Amano, a pivotal moment in his development.. During his undergraduate and graduate studies at Utah State University, Luke balanced rigorous practice and performance with teaching, fostering a refined and comprehensive musicianship.

Alongside performing, Luke has taught extensively in classroom and private settings. From 2003, he taught undergraduate courses at USU, including Keyboard Skills (2003-2015), Aural Skills I-IV (2004-2012), Theory I & II (2005-2007), Collaborative Piano (2013-2016), and Applied Instruction (2008-2016), guiding over 20 college pianists for their degree recitals.

He also directed a week-long Summer Piano Clinic (2006-2015), attracting 50+ pre-college students annually from the western United States. After earning his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (2007) and Master of Music in Piano Performance & Pedagogy (2010) from Utah State University, Luke served on the piano faculty and as primary teaching assistant to Gary Amano.

In 2016, Luke pursued a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Oklahoma, completing all coursework, recitals, and examinations in an accelerated 18-month program. During this time, he trained in Ashtanga Yoga, integrating breath work and biomechanical awareness into his practice. Returning to Utah in 2017, Luke focused on private instruction, training young and advancing pre-college pianists.

Luke’s teaching success is evident in his students’ achievements. They have earned top awards in solo competitions, performed with community orchestras, and appeared in the Utah Symphony’s Salute to Youth concert. Over the past decade, six students have performed at Carnegie Hall as winners of the American Protege International Piano Competition. Others have secured first place at the Youth Guild Competition, UMTA Concerto Competition, Weber State Piano Festival, Utah Valley Competition, Cache Valley Concerto Competition, Salt Lake Piano Competition, and over ten first-place awards at the USU Piano Festival.

Luke currently resides in Draper, Utah with his wife and three children. When he is away from the piano, he enjoys traveling, spending time outdoors, practicing yoga, and making memories with family and friends.
