Piano Lessons with Evan H.

Evan is an emerging composer, teacher and performer based in Portland, Oregon. He has studied music since childhood after discovering an early affinity for piano. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma, he was given the opportunity to study organ, which has become his primary instrument and a major influence on his compositional technique. He then went on to earn a Master's of Music at the University of Oregon in composition and continues his organ studies. Since high school he has been primarily interested in the modern repertoire as well as the works of J.S. Bach and earlier contrapuntal masters, a focus culminating in his recent masters thesis, Chamber Symphony (2025), that takes an eclectic yet systematic approach to aesthetically and theoretically synthesizing these two disparate traditions in his personal lyrical style.

With experience working in most major genres of contemporary classical music, Evan Hargrave primarily writes for and performs mixed chamber ensemble and solo keyboard repertoire, with a particular interest in collections and suites of keyboard miniatures. Following his Chamber Symphony (2025), he also hopes to add more symphonic works to his catalog.

As a teacher, Evan draws on his experience in classical music, jazz, world music, and experimental genres for a diverse perspective in music instruction, along with a strong basis of music theory from his composition studies. He has worked with piano students of all ages and likes to take a supportive and collaborative approach to instruction, using his music theory background to methodically develop strong fundamental music skills.
