Piano Lessons with Yilin L.

My name is Yilin, a pianist and educator based in New York City. Born in 1998, I have devoted my life to music with the belief that the piano is not only a medium for artistic expression but also a bridge that connects people’s hearts.

I hold both a Master of Music degree and a Professional Studies Diploma in Piano Performance from Mannes School of Music at The New School, where I studied under distinguished pianists and pedagogues. During my studies, I performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborator, has very good technique and deep thinking in music.

I approach performance and music with a deep sense of devotion and reverence, as I believe music is not only an art form but also a spiritual practice and inner faith. As much as I love performing, I am equally dedicated to teaching and I also like kids. I have taught piano to students ranging from young beginners to adults, in both China and the United States. My teaching philosophy is rooted in the idea that music education is not just about mastering technique, but about inspiring each student to discover their unique voice, have fun and enjoyable in music. For beginners, I emphasize the basic skills: rhythm, ear training, and foundational. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on musical interpretation, stylistic understanding, and performance confidence. For those pursuing a professional path, I uphold high standards of discipline, artistry, and stage presence.

In my philosophy, skills development lies at the heart of music education. A solid technical foundation and strong musicianship not only prepare students for advanced artistic exploration but also empower them in their personal lives. Whether or not they pursue a professional career in music, I hope they can find strength and beauty through their study, and let music serve as a source of inspiration and support.

Beyond technique, learning music cultivates focus, patience, creativity, and emotional expression—qualities that enrich their everyday lives. My goal as a teacher is to create a learning environment that adds color and meaning to my students’ journey, making music a lasting gift they can carry with them throughout life. In the lessons, I strive to create an environment that is both supportive and challenging. I believe that students learn best when they feel encouraged, respected, and motivated. Music can sometimes be a difficult journey—full of obstacles and moments of doubt—but I see myself as a guide who walks alongside my students, helping them grow not only as musicians but as individuals.

Looking ahead, my goal is to balance performance and pedagogy, continuing to share my artistry on stage while nurturing the next generation of musicians. I truly believe that music has the power to inspire, to heal, and to transform lives. It is my honor and responsibility to pass this gift on to my students, and to help them discover the joy of expressing themselves through music.
