Cello Lessons with Ryan D.

Ryan D. is a dedicated musician and performer who brings a lifetime of musical experience to his teaching studio. His journey began at the age of three with the piano, a formative foundation that led to a diverse career across keyboard and string instruments. Ryan’s extensive background in both piano and cello allows him to offer a unique, multi-faceted perspective to his students at City Strings and Piano.

Ryan’s cello studies have been shaped by some of the most cherished names in the field, having studied under Kacy Clopton, Silver Ainomäe, and the world-renowned Matt Haimovitz. This high-level mentorship informed his own performance career, which includes serving as the principal cellist for the Luther College Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. His orchestral experience is vast, spanning the University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra and international tours, including notable performance tours through Italy and Austria.

Beyond the classical scene, Ryan is passionately involved in the Twin Cities musical theater scene. He has contributed his talents to numerous pit orchestras for productions such as The Prom, Bright Star, Cabaret, and Pippin, often alternating between cello and keyboard roles. Notably, his leadership skills were highlighted during his time with STMA Theater. During his time as a student and beyond, he has served as a pianist, cellist, actor, and technical crew member.

As an educator, Ryan combines his technical mastery with a genuine passion for student development. His experience teaching piano began in high school, and he further refined his pedagogical approach through five years as an assistant teacher at Step By Step Montessori Schools. This background in Montessori environments gives him a specialized ability to engage with students ages 2-11, fostering their social, emotional, and cognitive growth through music. Ryan also holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Minnesota, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his studies.

Ryan remains deeply connected to the local music community. Whether teaching a young beginner their first notes or helping an advanced student refine their technique, Ryan is committed to nurturing a lifelong love of music in every student he meets.
