Violin & Viola Lessons with Hui J.

Hui J. is a violinist and dedicated teacher who brings warmth, curiosity, and extensive performance experience to every lesson. With a musical background spanning China and the United States, she has studied and performed in a wide range of orchestral, solo, and chamber music settings. She enjoys helping students build strong technical foundations while also developing confidence, musical expression, and a genuine enjoyment of playing the violin.

Hui holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Violin Performance from the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory, where she received a full scholarship and served as a Concertmaster Fellow. She earned her Master of Music in Violin Performance from Mannes School of Music in New York, where she received a Presidential Scholarship, and previously studied at the College of Charleston and Soochow University School of Music in China.

As a performer, Hui has served as concertmaster and principal violinist with several orchestras, including the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra, Mannes Orchestra, and College of Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Her performances have taken her to venues including Lincoln Center, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Steinway Hall, and the Gaillard Center. She has also appeared in festivals and performances throughout the United States, China, and Italy and has worked with repertoire ranging from classical masterworks to contemporary music and new premieres.

Hui has taught violin students of all levels and currently serves on the violin faculty at REW Music School and as a violin instructor with the UMKC Conservatory Academy. She teaches in both English and Mandarin.

In her lessons, Hui aims to create a supportive, relaxed environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting, and learning from mistakes. She adapts her teaching to each student's goals, whether they are working on classical repertoire, exploring pop and contemporary music, preparing for performances, or simply learning for fun. Hui believes that progress comes from a combination of thoughtful practice, good technique, patience, and curiosity—and she enjoys celebrating the small victories along the way.
