Piano Lessons with Culley L.
Culley has been playing music since age 10, beginning on bass and piano before joining the concert band world in middle school. Throughout his schooling, Culley focused on clarinet while also playing saxophone and tuba in marching band. In his studies at the University of South Carolina, Culley took part in the clarinet and piano studios while majoring in music theory. He has completed doctoral and master’s level course work such as Eastman School of Music’s Contemporary Music Theory class in Paris, France, as well as Schenkerian Analysis.
Since moving to Denver, Culley has switched his focus to modern piano styles. In 2023, he played keyboard in The Candlelight’s production of Cat’s the Musical for 60 performances. He currently plays funk and rock at open jams around Denver.
Culley’s teaching philosophy stems from his classical concert band background. He has studied under Scott Rush, co-writer of the famous Habits of a Successful Band Musician. Culley’s approach to curriculum can be flexible and tailored to each student because of his comprehensive training in multiple instrument groups. Every student has different needs and goals, and Culley works to provide a fundamental base while still taking time to make each student’s education unique. He also places a major emphasis on technique and form regarding tension-free playing for a longer musical life. He looks forward to building new musical relationships and creating a relaxed learning environment for the years to come.
