Cello Lessons with Maya W.

Maya is a passionate cellist and educator who thrives to help students grow in skill, confidence, and creativity through music. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Nordic Studies from Luther College, where she studied with Kacy Clopton, and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Education at DePaul University.

Maya has performed with the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, and various other chamber ensembles, as well as in solo recitals featuring music from Bach to contemporary BIPOC composers. She brings this rich performance background into her teaching, offering students both technical foundation and musical expression allowing them to be exposed to the music of old as well as the music of underrepresented communities and contemporary women composers alike.

Maya’s teaching journey began in her home town and has grown through years of private cello instruction and ensemble coaching. She works each summer at Dorian Summer Music Camp, where she mentors young musicians in orchestra and chamber settings.

As a teacher, Maya was raised in as well as utilizes the Suzuki teachings, which emphasize learning by ear, developing strong fundamentals, and fostering a supportive partnership between teacher, student, and family. She puts the student first in every lesson, adapting her approach to meet each individual’s needs and goals—whether preparing for auditions, strengthening cello technique, or simply learning for the joy of music. Her approach emphasizes patience, creativity, and encouragement, creating a positive space for students of all ages to thrive.
