Cello Lessons with Zach Larson

Cellist and tubist Zach Larson, a graduate of the Boston University School of Music, holds a Performance Diploma (2023) and a BM in Cello Performance (2019). Under the guidance of renowned pedagogue Michael Reynolds, cellist of the Muir String Quartet, Zach held principal positions in various university ensembles, including serving as principal cellist in the Boston University Symphony Orchestra's April 2023 performance of Mahler’s “Resurrection” symphony at Boston Symphony Hall. Between his BU studies, Zach earned an MA from the University of Central Florida (2021), where he served as a Graduate Assistant and contributed to the newly formed UCF Pegasus String Quartet.

Originating from the picturesque Black Hills of South Dakota, Zach's musical journey began in grade school when he picked up both the tuba and cello, remaining devoted to both instruments. In high school, he co-founded the Quartz Quartet and attended prestigious programs such as Interlochen Arts Camp and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Earning the reputation of a "double threat" among colleagues, Zach also holds a BM in Tuba Performance from BU, where he studied with Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Tubist, Mike Roylance.

Zach is highly sought after on both instruments, having had the privilege of performing in renowned concert halls across the United States, South America, and Europe, including Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

Beyond his active performance career, Zach is committed to nurturing the next generation of artists. Whether teaching with the Boston Youth Symphony’s ICP program or the Chamber Music Festival of The Black Hills, he strives to create a learning environment characterized by discipline, legacy, fun, and, most importantly, a loving curiosity.

Zach's principal cello teachers include Michael Reynolds, David Bjella, Sarah Freiburg, and Jurgen de Lemos. He has also collaborated with esteemed artists such as the Dover String Quartet, Benjamin Zander, Zuill Bailey, Melissa Kraut, Mihail Jojatu, and Peter Zazofsky.
